Naval Supply Corps School Athens

As a function of BRAC 2005, the Department recommended the closure of Naval Supply Corps School Athens and relocation of the Supply Corps Officer training mission, staff and associated enter for service support to Naval Station Newport, RI. In August 2005, the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to accept the Department's recommendation. The DoD Report estimated that this action would result in a loss of 831 jobs (513 direct and 318 indirect jobs) in the Athens-Clarke County, GA, Metropolitan Statistical Area. NSCS Athens encompasses approximately 58 acres in Athens-Clarke County, a unified government. The University of Georgia has since acquired the site for its medical school.
